Social Security Marriage Name Change

If you’re married and want to change names the first step should be updating your details with the SSA. It’s always best to start by answering a few questions on the SSA website. Some states have integrated marriage certificates and identification, allowing you to go through the entire process online, saving a trip into an office!

If your identity or name change cannot be digitally confirmed, the site will direct you to complete the name change in person at a branch. You will be provided with a list of original identity documents to take. Some branches may let you book appointments in advance too.

SSA customers can still file the completed the SS-5 form to change names in person. The downside of the paper form is that you must provide original identification for all categories of proof, even if you have recently proven citizenship or identity.

It may take 2 to 3 days for your new details to be live with the SSA. Next, attend a DMV location to get your license or non-driver card updated. Some states may need you to provide proof that your name has been updated with the SSA, so you may need to wait for the SSA card or correspondence in your new name.
